Art Critique

This Piece is called, "The Persistence of Memory", by Salvador Dali and is one of his most recognized works. The pieces' medium is oil on canvas and is 24x33cm. This was created in 1931 during an artistic movement called surrealism in which many artists created pieces exploring the different worlds of art. The Persistence of Memory includes a particularly dark setting at what appears to be the beginning of a sunrise or the end of a sunset. In the piece, there are various objects such as clocks melted over trees and other things that you wouldn't see in the real world but more the dream world.
This piece is a very surrealistic painting that you wouldn't see in the real world with some of its imaginary qualities you would see in the dream world. The artist makes sure to put the focus on the clocks melted over the tree the table and another object on what seems to be the desert ground. The painting overall gives out a very calm tone when observed with not much to stick out and surprise you but enough to grab anyone's attention. The solid coloring also brings attention to the fact that there is no life other than the ants on the stopwatch in the bottom left corner since the water is motionless and the desert is completely empty
In this piece, the artist is obviously trying to convey some significant point with many subtle but apparent clues throughout the painting. All life in the picture is absent other than a few ants which could refer to the artist being lonely and not having many people in his life. There is also the same time on each of the stopped clocks drooped over the various objects which could be the time that someone special to him passed on and was the time engraved in his memory. Overall the piece is very beautiful and shows that the artist meant to do so in the sun setting or rising in the background giving off the lighting from the horizon.
This is personally one of my favorite paintings in history as it catches my eye with something new every time I get to observe it. All the parts and objects within the piece are random yet interrelated through possible significance in the artists' life. I also think that the painting is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye with the subtle coloring that brings focus to certain parts through the painting. The smoothness of the piece is very calming to look at and transitions from light to dark coloring are very pleasing as well.
